Old No 7 Lynchburg Cough Elixir - The Whiskey Cave

Down in Lynchburg Tennessee they may not have cured the common cold but the local folks have a secret remedy.  It’s referred to as “Lynchburg cough syrup”.  Purely for medicinal purposes of course.

The recipe was shared with us by an old time local who promised we would never buy any cough medicines over the counter again.

Two Tennessee iconic products are used for this magical elixir. King Leo peppermint sticks which were made in Nashville since 1901 but moved away in 1999 and Jack Daniel’s which has been distilled in Lynchburg Tennessee since 1866.  Over 276 years of combined experience.

The recipe calls for Old No 7 Black Label for years, but recently Single Barrel has been the ingredient of choice.

Step 1

Empty a bottle of Jack and fill with broken King Leo peppermint sticks.

Jack Daniel’s single Barrel

Step 2

Pour the Jack back in and patiently wait about 12 hours.

Step 3

Pour the mixture over a strainer to catch the small bits of peppermint sticks that don’t dissolve and fill your bottle back up!

Here is a shot of the before and the after product.  Notice the slight pink tone and it’s no longer transparent.  Folks never wish to be a sick, but even the slightest cough does need to be treated.

Cheers

This works wonders. Also add some Jack to see hot tea with lemon and honey.
